Pearl of the Mediterranean.
On the north coast of Egypt is the charming city of Alexandria, once the shining gem of the Hellenistic world.
Alexandria is a true waterfront city, nearly 20 km long from east to west and only two km wide. The main port is on the western side of the Ras at-Tin promontory, while the Eastern Harbor is used mostly by fishing and pleasure craft. The tip of the promontory was once Pharos Island, where the famous lighthouse stood.
The port handles about 80% of Egypts import and export trade; more than 5000 ships call at Alexandria annually. It is cleaner and less congested than Cairo, and although it thrives to a certain extent on the romantic reputation of its past, it is still a warm and welcoming city.
Today Alexandria is the largest port in Egypt, a major industrial center, and the countrys unofficial summer capital, with a population of five million.Every year the atmosphere, and the citys reputation for the best food in the country draw thousands of holiday-makers to the waterfront cafés and beautiful beaches.
