Currency... The Jordanian Dinar (JD) is divided into 1,000 fils. (Some Jordanians refer to piasters instead of fils. There are 100 piasters = 300fils.)

Remember to Pack... Raincoats, walking shoes, small backpack, bathing suit, suntan lotion, mosquito repellent, basic medical kit, antiseptic and anti-diarrheal.

Health Precautions... Tetanus, hepatitis and polio vaccinations are recommended.For travelers with delicate stomachs, bottled water is cheap and readily available. Water is a precious resource in Jordan, and visitors are asked not to waste it unnecessarily. Health travel insurance is recommended.

Tipping... Most restaurants include a service charge in their bill, in which case it is not necessary to tip waiters. If service charge is not included, waiters should be tipped around ten percent of the bill. It is also customary to offer a tip to housekeeping personnel in hotels. Taxi drivers do not expect tips but one should agree on the fare before entering the taxi, if it is not metered.

What to Wear... Even in summer, evenings can be cool, so a sweater or shawl is advisable. Winters can be extremely cold, especially in Amman and the East: you will need a raincoat.
Jordan is primarily a Moslem country, although the freedom of all religions is protected. Moslem woman's clothing often covers their arms, legs and hair. Western woman are not subject to these customs, but very revealing clothing is never appropriate, and conservative dress is advisable for both men and women in downtown Amman and outside the cities.

Communications...

Telephone: Telephone services in Jordan are efficient and reliable. Jordan also has international direct dialing with most countries in the world, and calls can be made either from a telephone office or hotel, with a three-minute minimum charge. Outside Amman, public telephones are rare, but most small shops and supermarkets will allow you to use their phone for local calls, which cost 50 fils.

Newspapers... The main English-language daily paper is the .
A weekly English-language paper, , is published on Thursdays and has French-language supplement. Foreign newspapers are available at hotels and some shops.

Shopping... Shopping in Jordan can be a lot of fun, and may turn into something of a social occasion - in small shops, particularly, it is not unusual to be offered a cup of coffee or tea before getting down to business.
Hours... Shopping hours are flexible. Some shops are open from 9:30 - 1:30 and 3:30 - 6:00. Others may be open long hours, from 8:00 - 8:00 p.m. Many sops close on Friday, but the Suq does not. Earlier closings are in effect during most of the month of Ramadan.

Banking Hours... Banks are open Sat.-Th. 8:30-12-30, and some reopen in the afternoon from 3:30-5:30.
