Fez... Not to be missed

Lakes of crystal clear water, forests of the deepest green and the imposing mountains of the Middle Atlas: the Fez region reveals an unfamiliar, little-known and yet sublimely beautiful Morocco. You only have to travel a few kilometers to go from the bustle of town to the tranquillity of wide, open spaces. Beginning with a visit to the vast century-old forest of cedars in the Atlas, where barbary apes do acrobatics high above and the last of the spotted panthers roam. Every season, every hour has its own colors and its own vibrations: the pure white of winter and the green tenderness of spring, the soft blue glow of dawn and the fiery streaks of sunset...

Then there is the magnificent Fez Golf Course, a distillation of nature supremely orchestrated by Cabell B. Robinson.

The Cherry Orchards:
At Sefrou, in June, the local inhabitants celebrate the return of the cherries. They walk in procession to the tomb of the prophet Daniel. Then the joyful celebration is followed by folk dancing and singing. A delightful opportunity to discover the living folklore of the Middle Atlas.

The Waters Of Moulay Yacoub:
This is where you are encouraged to take a plunge! The warm and curative waters at Moulay Yacoub relieve rheumatism, nose and throat infections, skin problems and gynecological disorders. Be one of the first to enjoy the recently opened cozy and luxurious spa facilities at Moulay Yacoub with its teams of renowned medical specialists.

The Andalousian Mosque:
The mighty door of the Andalousian Mosque invites the faithful to prayer. Easily identified by its green and white minaret, the el Sahri medersa (1321) seems to be literally overflowing with luxurious decoration. All the medersas (Koranic schools) house a courtyard paved in marble or onyx that can be glimpsed through the open doors as a sanctuary of light. The voices of chanting children drift down from an open window. A sensitive ear will be able to discern in them the vibrations that link a whole people to its culture, the earth to the sky and matter to the spirit.

El Qaraouiyin Mosque:
It was the Kerouan people who were responsible for the imposing and splendid El Qaraouiyin mosque with its scintillating roof of emerald tiles. It is the oldest center of learning in the western world, predating even Oxford and the Sorbonne and now one of the main intellectual centers of North Africa. Its library, one of the largest in the world, contains over 30,000 books including a superb IXth century Koran. Founded in 857 it continued to grow until 1317, and now stands as a monument to faith, a dream of stone and deep religious conviction.

The Grande Rue des Merinides:
Bustling with life and lined with metal workers' shops, crosses this XVth century enclave from one side to the other.

The little Mechouar:
Its ramparts leads to the Moulay abdallah quarter and then on to Old Mechouar and its gardens, where the gentle rustling of the leaves seems to be whispering the long and passionate history of this quarter to those who stroll beneath. Formerly used for Royal Parades, it leads on to the Bab Al Makina, now open to the public, where you can find some of the finest carpet weavers in the country.

Into The Caverns:
Not far from Taza, the Friouato caverns reach to a depth of 180 meters. A staircase leads down into a veritable underground palace. Halls and galleries seem haunted by other-worldly forms - the stalactites and stalagmites reaching out into the void in a fairyland of mineral sculpture.
