Carefully consider driving in Cairo before you rent a car. Even the best drivers are in for a shock as they try to navigate and learn the rules at the same time.

Though many of the roads are improving, it is important to be aware of the many potholes and sandy conditions. Also, since roads are often kept to two lanes, be aware of cars frequently passing into oncoming traffic. Do like Egyptian drivers: use your lights and horn to communicate!

Night driving can be dangerous as many drivers only use lights to warn other oncoming cars of their presence.

Driving between cities in the daytime is the best bet. Many sites, like some of the hidden oases, unreachable by public transport, are accessible on some of the country roads. Also, going to the Sinai by four-wheel-drive offers many enjoyable excursions en-route.

Check carefully the insurance policy requirements and coverage prior to renting a car or any kind of driving. It can be costly and any insurance compensation will require a lengthy procedure.
