Nile Cruises/Land Tours

Red Sea Cruises/Land Tours and Mediterranean Cruises/Land Tours will be added in the near future.

Nile Cruises/Land Tours:

A Nile Cruise continues to be on of the most popular features of any visit to Egypt. The comfortably appointed and well-managed river boats provide the traveler with easy access to the many major archaeological sites along the Nile Valley. As the ship progresses along this impressive waterway, the full impact of the Nile's significance in Egypt's long and distinguished history becomes clear.

At the present time, there are over 190 boats licensed to operate Nile Cruises. Making the right choice would appear to be an impossible challenge. The following guidelines are suggested by MISR TRAVEL, Egypt's long established national tour operator:

-Nile Cruise ships are essentially river boats designed for the shallow waters of the Nile. They are often referred to as floating hotels. Actual cruising time is limited since much of the program is taken up with sightseeing. The ships are docked for part of each day to allow guests to disembark for shopping and independent exploration. All cabins are outside with large picture windows. A limited number of cruise ships in the higher price range have private balconies. All cabins have private bath. All 5 star vessels have a small swimming pool and sundeck.

-with the exception of the 10 night cruise (see below), the ships sail between Luxor and Aswan.

- to join a Nile cruise, clients will require air or rail transportation to Luxor or Aswan from Cairo.

- cruises range in length from 3 nights to 10 nights. Included in the price are all meals beginning with lunch on the first day and ending with breakfast on the last day. Guided sightseeing is also included in the cruise cost as follows:
3 night cruises provide 5 sightseeing tours including Swan, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Karnak and Luxor Temples. A tour to Luxor's West Bank sites (Valley of the Kings) is NOT included.
4 night cruises provide 6 sightseeing tours and include those listed above PLUS a tour of Luxor's West Bank sites.
6 and 7 night cruises provide all tours covered by the 4 night cruise. At the present time, the itineraries for these longer cruises vary from ship to ship. For example, some sail Luxor/Aswan and vice versa and include the 6 tours of the 4 night cruise itineraries PLUS a visit to the Temple of Denderah, north of Luxor. Others operate a circular cruise, sailing from Luxor to Aswan and back or vice versa with no additional tous other than those included on the standard 4 night itinerary.
10 night cruises sail from Cairo to Aswan and vice versa and include visits to the historical sites around Minya in addition to the tours included in the 6 and 7 night cruises. As a rule, 10 night cruises only operate from April until October because of navigational problems on some stretches of the river during winter months. At the present time, few ships are operating on this route.

- the ships managed by several international hotel chains - Hilton, Sheraton, Oberoi, Sonesta and Mowenpick - maintain a level of consistency and reliability in services and accommodation year after year. There are also several excellent locally owned and managed ships.

- dates of travel, length of stay and budget most frequently determine the choice of ship

- the excursion to the Abu Simbel Temples is NOT included in any cruise itinerary. This tour which involves a 35 minute flight from Aswan can be added to any visit at additional cost.

To complete a well balanced visit to Egypt, a minimum of 3 or 4 nights should be spent in Cairo.
